Various order picking systems can be used in order picking. The so-called pick density has a major impact on the right choice of system.
We call the ratio of the number of items in one order to the total number of items in the assortment (stock keeping units, SKUs) pick density. It can be low or high. If each order averages a relatively low number of lines, pick density is low. As a result, walking and/or driving times in the distribution center or warehouse are relatively high. A good solution then is to combine orders, in one-stage or two-stage batch picking (for example, a cart of boxes for different orders, respectively collecting items in stage 1 and assigning those items to different orders in stage 2).
With high pick density, each order contains a relatively high number of lines on average. As a result, walking and/or driving times in the distribution center or warehouse are relatively low. Combining orders makes little sense. Here, single picking (one picker collects one order) is the best solution.
In voice picking, each order picker has a voice terminal and headset with microphone. He thus humanely receives spoken instructions from the computer about the pick location. Once on site, he speaks a control number. After confirming the correct location, the system indicates in voice how many units it needs to collect.
