Industrial tablets

Industrial tablets

An industrial tablet, also known as a “rugged tablet,” is designed to function in demanding environments such as warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing environments and container terminals. Industrial tablets are typically equipped with a tough exterior and shock-resistant materials on the inside to make the tablet resistant to bumps and drops of up to 1.5 meters.

Durable tablets

Industrial tablets are designed with durability as the main focus, so they last a long time and can withstand harsh conditions. Manufactured from sturdy materials, they withstand bumps, drops and other forms of physical damage effortlessly. Many times these tablets carry an IP65 or IP67 certification, meaning they are resistant to water, dust and dirt. This makes them ideal for use in outdoor environments, humid locations and dusty places. The screen of industrial tablets is specifically designed to withstand scratches, cracks and other forms of damage. Usually made of tempered glass or shock-resistant plastic, they can withstand firm shocks and vibrations.

Just how drop-proof a tablet can be shows our own Rinus in the below edition of CaptureTech Spotlight, in which we always shine our light on the latest mobile devices.

Battery life and connectivity

The battery life of industrial tablets is typically longer than that of consumer tablets, allowing the devices to last a full shift without the need for charging or battery replacement. If the battery does run out, it can often be replaced without turning tablet off, which is called hot-swappable. These tablets also often offer a wider range of connectivity options, such as GPS, NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile data networks. This makes them perfect for use in remote areas or other environments where connectivity is limited.

Industrial tablet, forklift terminal or both?

Most industrial tablets can be customized to the user’s needs with various options and accessories. Think RFID adapters, 2D barcode scanners and a hand strap or shoulder strap to prevent falling. Do you also want to use the tablet on a forklift, pallet truck or order picker? Then choose a tablet with a so-called “vehicle-mount” option with docking station, so you can safely put the tablet in a holder and charge it via the forklift.

All in all, industrial tablets are designed for use in demanding conditions where consumer tablets would not survive for long. They are durable, highly resistant to water and dust, have extended battery life and offer a wide range of connectivity options.

Software for your industrial tablets

As a systems integrator, we connect your IT systems, data and people in the workplace. That’s why we always integrate our hardware and software with your existing ERP or WMS. Many of the manufacturers of these systems are our partners with whom we work more frequently.

Network infrastructure

A stable, secure and powerful WiFi network is crucial for efficient operation of your tablets and software. That’s why we implement advanced WiFi technology from Cisco Meraki and Extreme Networks.

By conducting a WiFi site survey, we analyze the entire frequency spectrum and provide the warehouse with the optimal number of WiFi Access Points. These Access Points are managed in Cisco and Extreme’s Cloud software.

Both tools have a clear dashboard that not only provides comprehensive configuration and management capabilities, but also provides insight into the overall network.

But which industrial tablet is best?

There is, of course, no “best” tablet. Which industrial tablets fit best in your environment depends on several important factors. Every warehouse, production environment, container terminal is different, as are the logistics processes there. Therefore

  • Location: Is it for field use, warehouses, manufacturing, cold and freezer storage or other location? This also affects the required connectivity of course, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and capability for mobile data connection.
  • Performance: Depending on the complexity of the apps you will use on the tablet, you will need more or less processor speed, RAM, storage capacity and battery life.
  • Cost and Budget: The budget is a critical factor. The purchase cost of the tablet and any additional costs for accessories, maintenance, and support must fall within the budget.

But the most important thing is management, support and service. You want your tablets to always work, stay working a full shift, be secured against cyber-attacks, be up-to-date with the latest software, and be able to get new tablets up and running quickly with all the default settings and apps already installed. Only then will you achieve the highest efficiency and the best Total Cost of Ownership of your equipment.
