VCK Logistics was still using outdated barcode scanners. The company’s rapid growth created the need to modernize the barcode scanner fleet and, after analysis and advice from CaptureTech, the TC8000 (and later the TC8300) barcode scanners from Zebra were chosen. This to the great satisfaction of the warehouse workers.

So big, in fact, that some colleagues tried to keep their favorite handheld barcode scanner to themselves. Nothing wrong with that in itself, were it not for the fact that there was no longer a good overview of which barcode scanners were in use, which were missing and which needed to be recharged.

"With ZAMS, we can see at a glance how many barcode scanners are in use and how many are still available."
Chris Jonker, System Manager

Need for overview

During one of the update calls with CaptureTech, System Manager Chris Jonker explained what they were up against at VCK Logistics. When CaptureTech announced that Zebra would now have its own barcode scanner-registration system, Jonker’s interest was immediately piqued. The video CaptureTech showed him about how ZAMS works then convinced him completely to enter a POC process. “We really needed an overview and it seemed that the Zebra Access Management System could provide this for us. Meanwhile, ZAMS has been installed in all of our warehouses and we are about to go live.”

Logging in and out with employee card

A small number of regular warehouse employees went through a trial with the new system. “Actually, everyone was excited right away,” Jonker says. “It works very intuitively. Each employee has a pass. A barcode is stuck on the warehouse workers’ passes that they can scan at the beginning of their shift to grab a terminal from the rack. At the end of the shift, they log out again by scanning that same code again. Ideal! This way we no longer lose anything and we can see at a glance how many mobile computers are in use and how many are still available.”

The new solution also helps with efficiency at the starts of shifts. “Now that we are working with ZAMS, a barcode scanner is always available and everyone can start immediately. The employees themselves also saw the added value of the new system from day one and are very happy with it.”

One point of contact for all IT matters

Whether VCK Logistics consulted other parties for the implementation of ZAMS? “Yes, but in the end there was no reason to change,” Jonker explained. “We have enjoyed doing business with CaptureTech for six years. I find it very valuable that we have one point of contact for all our scanning business. CaptureTech knows VCK, knows our network and where our needs lie. Moreover, they think proactively with us. For example, once in a while I get an e-mail from our regular contact person telling me about new updates or features that may be important to us. I am very happy with our cooperation.”

What is the Zebra Access Management System?

ZAMS is a cloud-based software tool that allows you to easily assign devices to your employees. In doing so, you make them responsible for the device on which they log in at the beginning and log out at the end of each shift. ZAMS helps you reduce device damage and loss, lowers costs and provides a better Return On Investment (ROI) on your Zebra equipment.
